AI citation: definition and what triggers it
Short answer
Have questions?
A mention is the appearance of the brand name in the text of the answer. A citation credits a piece of content as a source, usually with a link. The two are measured separately, because a brand can get one without the other.
You need to be present in the sources ChatGPT consults and considers reliable: media, directories, comparisons, reviews. On your own website, clear, structured and sourced content increases the chances of being picked up. Nothing guarantees a citation, but combining both levers makes it more likely.
It contributes. An article in a recognised media outlet is a source that AI tools read and cite, and it associates your brand with a topic. The more numerous and consistent these associations are, the more likely the brand is to be named.
Not in standard answers, which cannot be bought. Some platforms are starting to offer advertising formats, but they are separate from the answers and labelled as such. Organic citation remains the result of the brand's presence and reputation.
