Short answer

A media pitch is a short message (200 to 400 words maximum) sent directly to a journalist to propose a topic, an angle, or an interview. Unlike a press release, it is not intended to be published as is: its sole objective is to get a positive response. A good pitch is personal, quick to read, and relevant to the journalist's current beat.

Media pitch vs. press release: what is the difference?

A press release is an official document distributed to a list of media outlets. A pitch is an individual message. Where a press release informs, a pitch seeks to persuade. A journalist receives between 50 and 200 emails a day, depending on the time of year. The pitch must clear this hurdle in just a few seconds of reading. A press release sent without an accompanying pitch usually ends up in the trash.

How to structure an effective media pitch?

A high-performing pitch follows a four-part structure. First, a hook of 1 to 2 sentences that links the topic to the journalist's current news cycle or editorial line. Next, the proposed angle: why this topic now, and why this source is credible. Then, the key elements (figures, facts) in 3 bullet points maximum. Finally, a concrete proposal: an interview, an exclusive, a demo, or a visit. The email subject line is just as crucial as the body of the message.

Personalization: what separates a read pitch from an ignored one

A generic pitch sent to 50 journalists in CC gets a response rate close to zero. Personalization means citing a recent article by the journalist, showing that you know their editorial line, and adapting the angle to their readership. This takes more time but radically changes the results. A pitch sent to 5 well-selected and well-personalized journalists will always outperform a mass, untargeted blast.

What we see with our clients

Startups that contact us for their public relations have often already sent out press releases with no results. Our analysis consistently shows the same thing: messages that are too long, too brand-focused, and lacking a journalistic angle. Once the pitch is reframed around a sector-specific issue, the response rate typically jumps from 0 to 15-25% among targeted media outlets.

When should you send a press pitch?

Tuesday and Wednesday mornings between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM are statistically the best times to reach newsrooms. Avoid Friday afternoons, Monday mornings (when inboxes are full), and the days before public holidays. Timing in relation to current events is even more critical: a pitch tied to a sector-specific event (trade show, annual report, legislation) significantly increases the chances of coverage.
