News hook or journalistic angle: what is the difference?
The angle is the point of view chosen to cover a story. The news hook is the timing trigger. The same story, “startups struggle to hire developers”, can have a good angle and no reason to be published this week. A new study, a law coming into force or a trade show opening gives it that reason.
What are the types of news hooks?
- The calendar: a trade show, a key date, a recurring industry event.
- New data: a study, a barometer, an unpublished internal figure.
- Other people's news: a decision, a law, a trend to react to (this is newsjacking).
- A first: a launch, a funding round, a contract, a new office.
- A milestone: a number of customers, an anniversary, a stage reached.
Why do journalists pay so much attention to it?
Journalists receive far more pitches than they can handle. 72% of them say that less than a quarter of the pitches they receive are relevant (Cision, State of the Media 2026). A pitch with no reason to be published now rarely gets through that filter.
Data is the hook you control best: 40% of journalists say they value original data in a pitch (Muck Rack, State of Journalism 2026).
How do you find a hook when you have no news?
A startup can create its own news. It can publish data from the use of its product (anonymised), take a stand on a debated topic, or time an announcement with a key moment in its industry's calendar. What matters is that the hook interests the outlet's readers, not just the company.
To go further
The news hook works together with the journalistic angle and can take the form of newsjacking. To go further on what newsrooms look for: what content interests journalists.
