Share of voice: definition and how to calculate it
Short answer

Share of voice is a brand's share of all mentions within a panel of competitors, on a given channel and over a given period. A 30% share of voice means that 30% of the panel's mentions are about the brand.
Divide your brand's number of articles by the total coverage of your competitor panel over the same period, then multiply by 100. Keep the same panel and period from one measurement to the next so the comparison makes sense.
A first benchmark is the “fair share”: 100% divided by the number of brands in the panel. With five brands, that is 20%. A share of voice above this threshold means the brand takes up more space than its theoretical share.
They often move in the same direction, and share of voice is regularly presented as a leading indicator of market share. It is not a guarantee: strong visibility does not replace the offer or the sales effort.
