Short answer

A newswire (or press release distribution service) is a paid provider that pushes a press release out at scale: subscribing newsrooms, partner websites that republish it automatically, financial terminals and search engines. Business Wire, PR Newswire and GlobeNewswire are the best known. A newswire guarantees that the text circulates, not that a journalist writes about it.

What is a newswire?

A newswire is a distribution channel. A company provides it with a press release, selects a target area (a country, a region, or the world) and sometimes a sector, and then pays for the distribution. The text is sent to newsrooms subscribed to the feed, to hundreds of websites that republish it automatically, and to financial information platforms.

The model originated in the United States, where publicly traded companies use it to release their regulated information to all investors simultaneously. PR Newswire is now owned by Cision.

Newswire or press agency: what's the difference?

The two terms sound similar but refer to two very different professions. A press agency like AFP or Reuters employs journalists who produce news and sell it to media outlets. A newswire produces nothing: it distributes, for a fee, text written by a company. An AFP dispatch is news verified by an editorial team. A press release distributed via a newswire remains corporate content.

‍

Does a newswire generate press coverage?

Rarely on its own. Automatic republications inflate distribution reports, but they are not articles written by a journalist. In any case, newsrooms are highly selective: 72% of journalists believe that less than a quarter of the pitches they receive are relevant (Cision, State of the Media 2026).

A newswire serves three real purposes: regulated financial information, public timestamping of an announcement, and ensuring the press release appears in the feeds monitored by certain journalists and analysts, especially in the United States.

‍

Does a French startup need a newswire?

For an announcement in France, almost never. French tech journalists expect a targeted and personalized pitch with a clear news hook , not a press release received via a feed. The budget is better spent on building a well-researched media list and on follow-ups.

A newswire becomes useful when a scale-up is targeting an English-speaking market, as a supplement to direct outreach to journalists: it ensures the text appears in American feeds and provides a dateline that meets industry standards.
